Correspondence, writings, and documents include letters between Boyd and his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Smith Boyd, his mother, Alice Dunbar Boyd, and his editors, publishers, and admirers. Letters of Elizabeth Boyd Nash concern the biography of her father, Thomas Boyd. Writings include several of Boyd's short stories and Peggy's scrapbook journal. Miscellaneous documents include Peggy's father's genealogical papers and Boyd's military records. Newspaper clippings contain reviews of Boyd's books and Boyd's reviews of other literature.

Thomas Boyd was born in Defiance, Ohio on July 3, 1898. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War I. In 1920 he married Margaret "Peggy" Woodward Smith and they moved to Minneapolis where they wrote for newspapers. Boyd completed his first novel, Through the Wheat, about his war experiences. After divorcing in 1929 Thomas Boyd married Ruth Fitch and Peggy Smith married Ted Shane.
